Four common approaches
Connected-account access
You authorize access through an official sign-in flow. Review the exact permissions, developer identity, and revocation options before consenting.
Server-side export upload
You download your export, then upload it to another company. Its privacy policy, retention, access controls, and deletion practices become important.
Local browser processing
The page’s code reads the export on your device. Confirm that the tool clearly states files and results are not transmitted, and inspect network behavior if you can.
A seven-point checklist
- Does it avoid collecting your Instagram password?
- Does it explain whether your export leaves the device?
- Does it identify the company or operator and provide contact information?
- Does its privacy page describe payment, hosting, logs, retention, and browser storage?
- Does it make precise claims instead of promising a historical unfollower list from one current export?
- Does it use HTTPS and avoid unnecessary advertising trackers?
- Can you revoke access or delete uploaded data when applicable?
Protect the downloaded export
An Instagram export may contain more than follower relationships if you selected extra categories. Request only the information needed, keep the ZIP private, and remove copies you no longer need. Follow the minimal export settings to reduce exposure.
